Pick a task that you think should take roughly 25 minutes to accomplish. The basic process is normally described as something like this:ĭecide what you're going to do. Over the past few decades, the technique has become more popular. Since the Italian for tomato is "pomodoro," he called his system the Pomodoro Technique after the original little tomato timer. And it helped-he was instantly more productive, at least when the timer was running.Īfter a bit of tweaking, testing, and refining, Cirillo settled on 25 minutes of work followed by a five-minute break, repeated four times, as the best balance for him. Cirillo started by setting it for 10 minutes and trying to just work for the 10 minutes until the timer rang. Inspiration came from a small tomato-shaped kitchen timer. He kept getting distracted and losing focus (and he didn't even have Instagram or TikTok), so he went looking for a way to keep his mind on track. Even I can keep typing that long.įrancesco Cirillo developed the Pomodoro Technique in the 1980s when he was in college in Italy and struggling to study. I'm just seven minutes into my current work block, but I know I only have to wait 18 more minutes until my next cup of coffee. That's long enough that you can stay engaged and make real progress, without feeling like it's a grind, while the 5-minute breaks, which never feel far off, give you a chance to freely check Twitter or look at some emails without overly disrupting your workflow. The work blocks are just 25 minutes long. What makes the Pomodoro Technique so effective is just how easy it is to implement. I'm using it right now to write this article. As a professional writer, it's the tool I bust out whenever I need to hit a deadline or just get work done without dawdling. While it didn't single-handedly get me through my college degrees, it helped me get better grades with less effort. I've used the Pomodoro Technique (or variations on it that we'll look at later) for more than a decade. After that, you take a 15- to 30-minute break, depending on how you feel. Here's what you do: You set a timer for 25 minutes, work until it's up, then take a 5-minute break-and repeat the whole process three more times. The Pomodoro Technique sounds unbelievably basic, but it works far better than you'd think. Toggl Track for combining Pomodoro with time-tracking Session for the best possible Pomodoro app for Apple users MarinaraTimer for a shareable web-based Pomodoro timer Pomodor for a simple web-based Pomodoro timer So, let's look at the best Pomodoro timers. While any timer (or timer app) will work for the Pomodoro Technique, a dedicated Pomodoro app can make the already simple technique even simpler by automatically alternating between work and break periods, tracking how many different periods you've completed, and generally just smoothing out the hassle of winding up a manual timer or constantly checking the clock.

Because nothing sounds better than doing absolutely nothing. Marc and Sharon Costanzo share a lackadaisical vocal affect-it sounds like they hit the studio directly after getting burned on the beach-but where so many slackers couldn’t be bothered to shape their slothfulness into hooks, Len cares deeply about leisure: They’re committed to wasting away the hours that make up a dull day. Its foundational sample of Andrea True Connection’s disco classic “More, More, More” reveals itself as a grounding mantra, then the bliss goes widescreen once Len crash into the verse. The song comes into view slowly, like a mirage shimmering on the edge of a sun-bleached horizon. Somehow, a pair of Canadian siblings managed to capture the essence of Southern California in a single that turned into a summertime perennial. 5 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart.Of all the great one-hit wonders of the ’90s, Len’s “Steal My Sunshine” might be the most enduring and the most inexplicable. There’s no denying Vedder’s gradual breakdown, as he takes you on an emotional ride that culminates with the exploding vocals, “try to forget this, try to erase this, from the blackboard” followed by an array of “ah ha’s” echoing until the end. The band’s next visual being the animated “Do The Evolution,” in which the band does not appear (see above). The powerhouse track, inspired by a story Vedder read in the newspaper about a student who killed himself in from of his class, was overshadowed by its controversial music video, taking home Best Video of the Year at the 1993 MTV VMAs. It was the popularity of this video which led to Pearl Jam taking a step back from making them. 6 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.ģ:30 in the afternoon. The song, about personal freedom, was written following the tragedy at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, where nine fans died during the band’s set. Vedder described the song “as close to a love song as we’ve ever gotten.” It peaked at No. The song, “a riff on human arrogance,” marked Pearl Jam’s first music video since “Jeremy.” In a 1998 interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer, Vedder said the song is about “someone who’s drunk with technology, who thinks they’re the controlling living being on this planet.” It peaked at No. “Not For You” is dedicated to anyone who has messed with the integrity of the music - and more importantly, profited from the music. Perhaps you’ve heard that Pearl Jam is not the biggest fan of Ticketmaster. When Vedder takes the stage, he gets a bump of encouragement from Keith Richards before the magic begins. The Rolling Stones and Eddie Vedder “Wild Horses” (2005)Īnother genius duet between two of the most famous frontmen in rock history, this time with The Rolling Stones‘ Mick Jagger. “I can’t feed on the powerless when my cup’s already overfilled.”Ī genius (and unplanned) duet between Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell marking Vedder’s first recorded vocal for a major record. During the 1993 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Vedder fronts The Doors’ 1967 hit “Light My Fire.” He gets way into it and that last “firrrrre” at 7:45 is just that. No one can replace Jim Morrison - but Eddie Vedder is a worthy stand in. The Doors and Eddie Vedder “Light My Fire” (1993) Whether the song is about love (or a surfboard), does it really matter? Pearl Jam’s Ten gave us the beginning of the band and a single (among several) that has always stood out. “Oceans” is short, beautiful, and a song I find myself listening to several times in a row, to get the full effect. His ability to deliver pure emotion is just one of his many gifts. Vedder said “the song is about letting go,” but at 4:55 when he tugs right at the heartstrings, you’ll never want to. Notice the way Vedder takes hold of the mic, closes his eyes and possibly drifts into another world. Simply put, a will is a legal document that allows you to communicate your wishes about the distribution of your assets after death and appoint guardians for your dependents. The truth is, there is no way of knowing when your time will come so you need to create a will as soon as possible. This scenario is all-too-common as many people do not want to confront the inevitable. We’ve all heard horror stories about people, including wealthy celebrities, who died without a will. Knowing exactly what estate planning entails is the first step to getting started.ġ0 steps for smart estate planning 1 – Create a will if you do not have one. The process can be emotional, confusing, and overwhelming. Whether you have amassed substantial wealth or you’ve simply acquired enough assets to live a relatively comfortable life, estate planning can be challenging if you don’t know what to do. If you’re someone who cares about your finances and loved ones now, you have reason enough to create and maintain an estate planning strategy for the future. You may not be a multimillionaire yet, but your circumstances likely include some complexity that warrants putting a solid plan in place. You don’t have to be wealthy to leave behind assets worthy of careful estate planning. Yet if you reach the end of your life without getting your financial affairs in good order, you’ll risk leaving your heirs with problems that could’ve been avoided, causing them unnecessary stress and uncertainty during a time of grief. Estate planning is something many people tend to put off as long as possible because most of us consider discussing “the end” an uncomfortable topic. ‘We don’t know who it was it looks like they Disapparated. However, that is not what Arthur says when he emerges from the woods. What was I supposed to say?’” (GoF 147-148) Weasley in exasperation, handing the paper to Percy. But ironically, the facts do not match up with his recollection. This bit of Rita’s writing is actually given credence by the Weasleys when Arthur assumes that it’s about him. Here we have a curiosity, as pointed out to me by Sophia Jenkins. A Ministry official emerged some time after the appearance of the Dark Mark alleging that nobody had been hurt, but refusing to give any more information. If the terrified wizards and witches who waited breathlessly for news at the edge of the wood expected reassurance from the Ministry of Magic, they were sadly disappointed. (For more on the numbers at work here, please see my editorial “Death Eaters – Part 2: Voldemort’s Resurrection.”) The rest of the claims are true: The Ministry does commit blunders here, the culprits are not apprehended (since they’re all partying in a graveyard ten months later), and the Dark wizards are running unchecked.Įven calling it a “national disgrace” isn’t inaccurate: The Pottermore article on the history of the Quidditch World Cup calls this event “possibly the most infamous World Cup Final of the last few centuries.” Moreover, “the ICWQC censured the Ministry of Magic heavily after the event, judging that security arrangements had been inadequate given the known existence of a violent pure-blood tendency in the United Kingdom.” While the question of whether the security is lax is open to interpretation, one could certainly make that argument, especially since there are at most 30-ish Death Eaters causing all this havoc. Ministry blunders … culprits not apprehended … lax security … Dark wizards running unchecked … national disgrace … In fairness to Rita, her first article (about the fiasco at the World Cup) does not seem to contain any falsehoods, though it leans rather heavily on opinion and criticism. One book later, we wish there were a reporter who’d speak truth to the power of the Ministry, rather than toting their water unquestioningly. This is before we realize the extent of the corruption in the Ministry. We are introduced to Rita’s writing even before we meet her, when Percy furiously accuses, “That woman’s got it in for the Ministry of Magic!” (GoF 147). Scenes of Terror at the Quidditch World Cup And in what should be absolutely no surprise, there are exactly seven pieces of Rita’s writing we are privy to throughout the books. Note that we’ll only go into the texts that are available to the reader since we cannot make judgment calls about Rita’s articles that are only referred to in the books. So I thought it worthwhile to consider all of Rita’s articles, to see what truth is buried underneath all the slander. But Jo intentionally included Rita in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to impart information to Harry and the reader, not just to serve as satire, so I think it’s incorrect to dismiss all of her material. I stumble across the dilemma quite frequently: How much of the information given to us in Rita’s articles can be considered factual, and how much of it can be dismissed out of hand? Fans tend to veer toward the latter: On the podcast Alohomora!, I often encounter the argument that evidence from Rita’s quill is inadmissible. But here’s the thing: One cannot just dismiss everything Rita writes, because there are always kernels of truth buried in there. That concept is personified in Rita Skeeter, Jo’s oddly prescient satire of unscrupulous journalism. It’s a problem all too familiar to us in the Muggle world: You can’t trust everything you read in the news. Be sure to keep at least a couple of inches (5 cm.) of water in the container at all times. A child’s wading pool or a galvanized metal container works well if you have several papyrus plants. Place the container inside a larger, water-filled pot with no drainage hole. Move the plant into a container with a drainage hole in the bottom. Overwintering papyrus plants is easy if you can provide sufficient warmth, light, and moisture. Be sure to bring your papyrus plant indoors where it will be warm and snug before temperatures in your area fall below 40 degrees F. Indoor papyrus care during winter is ideal for those living in cooler climates. How to Care for Papyrus in Winter Indoors Remove dead growth as it appears throughout the winter. Be sure the rhizomes are located where they are protected from freezing temperatures. In its native habitat, papyrus can reach heights of 16 feet (5 m.), but ornamental plants tend to top out at about one-third that height.Ĭyperus papyrus growing in warmer climates requires little winter care, although plants in zone 9 may die back to the ground and rebound in spring. Winterizing Cyperus PapyrusĪlso known as bulrush, papyrus ( Cyperus papyrus) is a dramatic aquatic plant that grows in dense clumps along ponds, swamps, shallow lakes, or slow-moving streams. Read on to learn more about winter papyrus care. Although papyrus doesn’t demand much effort, the plant will die if subjected to frosty weather. We will incorporate comments we receive from others, and welcome to hear from anyone who may have additional information, particularly if they share any cultural information that would aid others in growing it.Papyrus is a vigorous plant suitable for growing in USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11, but overwintering papyrus plants is critical during the winter months in more northern climates. We also note those observations we have made of this plant as it grows in the nursery's garden and in other gardens, as well how crops have performed in our nursery field. Information displayed on this page about Cyperus papyrus 'Dwarf Form' is based on the research conducted about it in our library and from reliable online resources. Another name for this plant is Cyperus papyrus 'Nanus' and under this name this plant received the prestigious Royal Horticulture Award of Garden Merit in 2002. We originally grew this plant starting in 2006 with a famous young Egyptian king's name as its cultivar name but this name became trademarked and we reverted back to using the current moniker of 'Dwarf Form'. We also grow the full size species, Cyperus papyrus. Our thanks to Randy McDonald of McDonald Water Gardens in Reseda, CA for our original stock on this plant. We are now using the cultivar name 'Dwarf Form' to describe this plant to avoid confusion with another taller plant being marketed under the name we previously used. The late Greg Speichert, aquatic plant specialist and author (with wife Sue) of the "Encyclopedia of Water Garden Plants" (Timber Press, 2004) provided us with the background material on this plant, as published in the International Society of Horticultural Science and suggested we change the name. This plant has been marketed in the US since 2004 under the invalid name Cyperus papyrus percamentus. It was also found to be considerably more shade tolerant than the full-sized plants that it was beind being compared to. In the course of this research a dwarf form of papyrus was isolated and it was determined that it was not only dwarf but grew with thicker stems and with more flower peduncles (the tassels at the top of a Cyperus stem) that were more compact than those on the full-sized papyrus. This plant was discovered in 1993 during a Cyperus propagation research project at Kagawa University in Japan. Its compact habit and shade tolerance make it well-suited to a smaller water garden but also make it a great addition to the large pond. Plant it up to 12 inches deep in water or in rich moist soil in full sun to medium shade (more shade tolerant than regular papyrus). This plant is a vigorous grower in or out of water. We love a beautiful beach that is calm and a nice sandy area for some great photos.ĭo any of these have free room service at night? I would assume that may be secrets does? Although we don’t mind kids as we have plenty of our own. I’ll let you know what’s important below. Secrets is the most expensive but not by much. We'd return to the first three in that list and maybe the Iberostar on a good deal. We've stayed at Cozumel Palace, Fiesta Americana, Explorean, Iberostar, Secrets, Sabor, and the Occidental. For the price, I would take Sunscape Sabor over all of them. All four of these resorts are about the same price. Unless you're getting a very good deal at Secrets, I'd pick the Iberostar (if you are only going to choose between the two). It is in the same area as the Occidental, Iberostar and Allegro. Take a look at Sunscape Sabor, we stayed there a couple of weeks ago and loved it. The Allegro and Iberostar are pretty similar, I would say the food at the Allegro was the worst, not bad, but not as good as the others. The Occidental Grand is the nicest of the three, but also the most expensive. They all have much larger beaches than Park Royal and a lot more seating. It seemed there was always a beach volley ball game going on. This did not work for us since most days we were out driving around the island. The food is real good, but last time we stayed there, you had to get in line before noon for reservations. It is small and on spring break, you will have to get up pretty early to get a beach chair. The rooms are modern and very much like a hotel room you would see in the USA. You can walk to shopping and many restaurants. Grand Park Royal is unique from the other 3 in that it is in town. We have stayed at all 4 and enjoyed all 4 locations. I would like a nice view of the Ocean from my room if possible.#40IsComing I like decent prices, decent food and good drinks. She did really like the Star Friends when we went to Iberostar but she was also 10 at the time. My daughter is an avid volleyball player, so if she can swim and play volleyball all day long she will be fine. I have heard that Iberostars usually have the best food so I don't know if maybe they were just running low (our last trip was the week AFTER Spring Break) or what was going on. Have also done research on both resorts, was planning on trying out Secrets Cozumel, until recent reviews came to light. A couple of things we did NOT like were the cats in the dining hall (there were a LOT of them), there were a bunch of tiny bugs in the rooms, the entrance to the Ocean, and the food was not good when we were there. We have stayed at the Iberostar Cozumel (35th Birthday) and for the most part we liked that resort. I will be celebrating my 40th Birthday and traveling with my teenage daughter. Can everyone give me their thoughts on these four hotels? I am playing around with a few different options for travel during Spring Break. Screen resolution and display options are also available. Rumble is present, and can be switched on or off. The default setting for the Wii Remote uses waggle to switch weapons, but that can be easily mapped to a button if movement pains you so much. Control can be entirely, COMPLETELY customised in each instance. ReBirth can be played with the Wii Remote on its side, the GameCube Controller or the Classic Controller. However, it comes highly recommended to any veterans seeking a fresh dose of Contra action, and even people who have never played a Contra before (after you play ReBirth you'll be wondering why not), as its easy difficulty setting is a nice gentle introduction to its style of gameplay. (The one before the final level is particularly odd.) The game borrows a heck of a lot from previous Contra games, and certainly isn't any kind of milestone or eternal classic for the series. What little "story" there is is presented in little slide-show interludes between levels. But you get the idea, right? The music consists mostly of energetic remixes of themes from previous Contra games, including the iconic first level BGM from the original game. In my personal opinion, this madness reaches its peak in Area 3, where missiles fill half the screen before a ninja and a line of exploding robot camels- Uh. There's also a strong dose of "madness" present. Remember that word? That people used back in the olden days? The action in ReBirth is frenetic as ever. In spite of all this, it's arguably more fun than the majority of high-budget, cutting-edge next-gen games in existence. The graphics consist of low-res 16bit style sprites and backgrounds. The presentation is dated (and authentic). Contra ReBirth is a perfect example, and deliberately so. Developers of today ought to take a look back at the ideals and philosophies of the past, if they wish to make truly entertaining games. Modern games often try to achieve these things and, more often than not, end up dull because of it. And for good reason it doesn't need to be. Nobody cares.Contra ReBirth doesn't try to be groundbreaking, immersive, innovative or spectacular. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.Ĭontra Force is also missing. I suppose one could complain about there being, ultimately, only seven games to the Arcade/Castlevania Anniversary Collection's sets of eight, but this is the most definitive Contra collection yet to become available! I'm hoping that a second collection (as has been mooted for the other two) is on the cards and will include some of the games I've talked up above. None of this is meant to reflect that the Contra Anniversary Collection is in any way incomplete, or disappointing. The story is utterly nonsensical and the setpieces are pure madness - watch out for a fleet of high-speed robot camels! It's short and not particularly difficult, but it's such an aesthetic treat and so goshdarn fun that it's the Contra I find myself replaying the most. Even by Contra's outrageous standards, Rebirth is utterly bonkers. The saddest loss is the literally-impossible-to-buy Contra Rebirth, a WiiWare exclusive from M2 (alongside similarly excellent Gradius and Castlevania titles). Despite this (or, if you are 14 years old, because of this), it's rather good. Naturally, being a WayForward game, they gave all the female characters pneumatic breasts. It also packed copious bonus content, such as extra playable characters from across the series. Utilising the handheld's dual screens to create a sense of verticality, Contra 4 was polished and demanding. WayForward's polarising Nintendo DS entry - inaccurately referred to as the fourth Contra - offers a surprisingly measured experience, with even more formidable difficulty than the series has already presented. Like rock-paper-scissors, but with HOT LEAD. It ditches the weapon power-ups for an unusual system wherein all your weapons are available to you at all times, with certain armaments more useful against certain foes. The inaugural PS2 Contra stuck to the series' traditional side-scrolling roots, though it expanded heavily on the boss-rush feel of Contra Hard Corps with even more pitched, multi-phase battles against truly grotesque monstrosities. Theres also a strong dose of 'madness' present. It's difficult to find anything to reasonably complain about, but it's worth noting a few omissions. That people used back in the olden days The action in ReBirth is frenetic as ever. Arcade, NES, SNES, Game Boy and Genesis Contras are included, along with their Japanese and European variants yes, the Probotector robots are back! That line-up in full: The line-up for the Contra Anniversary Collection has been released and it's just about everything from Hard Corps backwards. Various independent dealers around the country have closed since Apple started opening its stores in 2001, though the company contends that they only add to the overall market for Apple products. The opening of an Apple Store in Madison could spell trouble for The MacShop, an Apple retailer and service provider located on Odana Road on the west side of town. He also says all stores include a "Genius Bar" for Apple technical assistance, and newer stores also come with a "Studio Bar" for creative help. When queried about his knowledge of the store being planned for Madison, Allen said that he thinks it will be based upon a new design that is 30-feet wide and features an all-stainless steel interior. Sorry, no cashiers, operators or even a "Mac Genius" is currently being sought for a Madison location. As of March 1, Apple is currently hiring for several positions for a West Towne location, including store manager, assistant store manager, "Creative," business consultant, inventory control specialist, and Mac Specialist. These listings are actually listed by Apple itself, to be found among the job opportunities the company offers at its stores. Additionally, an employee at the Apple store at Mayfair Mall said he had no idea about any store opening in Madison, explaining that the company only releases such information on a public basis, and he would find out when everybody else did. There are no positions at any Apple Store to be found in job listings published by West Towne Mall, though. He provides more details about the new location in a chronology of Apple retail openings and those planed for the future, which notes that job listings for the new west side outlet were posted today. "And all that knowledge generates lots of Mac users, so it's not surprising that Apple will open a store at the West Towne Mall there, the third store in the state when it opens in the fall." "There's no city more hip and tech-savvy than state-capitol Madison (Wisc.), home to the University of Wisconsin," he wrote. Gary Allen of ifo Apple Store - a blog covering all matters of Apple retail and its enveloping rumors community - broke the news today, Thursday, Mar. How can it be, then, that word of an Apple Store on the west side of town, is already out there? The company has not announced a Madison location yet, in fact, and it's certainly months before the store is scheduled to open.
